A widow's peak is a V-shaped point of hair in the centre of the front hairline, with the hairline sitting slightly higher on each side of it. It is a normal variation in hairline shape, not a medical condition or a disease. Many people are born with one and it is visible in childhood photographs. The name comes from a 16th-century English term for the pointed mourning hood worn by widows, which had a similar V shape over the forehead.
It is inherited, but the classic textbook claim that a widow's peak is a single dominant gene is outdated. Hairline shape is polygenic: several genes influence where the frontal hair follicles stop, together with the shape of the skull and forehead. That is why a widow's peak often runs in families without following a neat dominant or recessive pattern, and why siblings can have quite different front lines.
Not by itself. A true widow's peak is stable — it looks the same in photos from five or ten years ago and the hair inside the peak is the same thickness as the rest of your scalp. What can look identical is early pattern hair loss, where the temporal corners retreat and leave the central hair standing forward as a false peak. The difference is movement: if the shape is changing, or the hairs at the sides are becoming fine and short, that is recession rather than a natural peak.
Compare photos taken a few years apart in similar lighting with dry hair pulled back. A natural widow's peak has a symmetrical, well-defined point, full-calibre hairs right up to the edge, and no change over time. A receding hairline shows deepening temporal corners, fine pale miniaturised hairs at the front, often asymmetry between the left and right side, and more visible scalp under bright overhead light. Increased shedding when washing and a family history of baldness point to recession too.
There is no medication that changes hairline shape. The two realistic routes are styling and surgery. Styling means a fringe, forward-styled or textured cut that breaks the V outline, rather than slicked-back styles that emphasise it. Surgically, the shape can be softened by adding single-hair grafts into the recessed areas on either side of the peak to rebuild a rounder frame — typically a small session that also restores the temporal corners. Removing hair to flatten the peak is rarely advised, because donor hair is finite and the peak is usually the strongest part of the hairline.
When the goal is only to fill the two recessed zones beside the peak and round the front line, roughly 800–1,500 grafts is a common range. If the temporal corners have also receded and a whole new frame is being designed, it is closer to 1,500–2,500 grafts. The exact figure depends on the width of the gaps, hair calibre and donor density, and is only meaningful after a doctor has examined your donor area — photo assessment gives an estimate, not a promise.
