Avoid smoking for at least 10–14 days after the procedure, and ideally stop a week before it. In the first days a transplanted graft has no blood supply of its own: it survives by absorbing oxygen and nutrients from the fluid in the surrounding tissue until new capillaries connect to it. Nicotine narrows exactly those small vessels, and the carbon monoxide in smoke lowers how much oxygen the blood can carry. The pause is short compared with the years you will live with the result.

If stopping completely is not realistic for you, reduce as much as you can and tell your clinical team the truth: the plan is built around your real habits, not ideal ones.
Yes. Alcohol in the days before surgery thins the blood and increases intra-operative bleeding, which makes graft placement more difficult and can affect how securely grafts seat in their channels. It also matters for sedation: your anaesthesia assessment depends on accurate information about alcohol and medication use.
