Shock loss is temporary shedding of hair after surgery. It affects two groups: the transplanted hairs themselves (which almost always shed between week 2 and week 4 while the follicle stays alive underneath) and, less often, weak native hairs around the recipient or donor area that were already miniaturising. In both cases the follicle is not removed — only the visible hair shaft is released.
Shedding of the transplanted hairs typically begins around day 10–14 and peaks between week 3 and week 6. Shock loss of surrounding native hair, when it happens, usually appears in the same window — weeks 2 to 8 after surgery.
The shedding phase itself lasts a few weeks. New growth from the transplanted follicles starts at month 3–4, becomes clearly visible at month 6, and reaches final density around month 12. Native hair affected by shock loss normally recovers within 3–6 months without any extra treatment.
