It depends on the surface area you want covered and the density planned for it. As a working guide: a hairline and frontal zone typically needs 1,500–2,500 grafts, frontal plus midscalp 2,500–3,500, and an advanced pattern covering front, midscalp and crown 3,500–5,000+. Your physician confirms the number after measuring the recipient area and assessing your donor hair.
The crown is a spiral (whorl) area, so hairs radiate outward and the eye reads density differently than on the hairline. A partial crown usually needs 800–1,200 grafts; a fully bald crown 1,500–2,500. Crown work is normally planned at a lower density than the hairline — around 35–50 FU/cm² — because a spiral pattern looks natural at that level.
Two measurements drive it: the recipient area in square centimetres, and the target density in follicular units per cm². Multiply them and you get the graft requirement. Hairlines are planned denser (roughly 45–55 FU/cm²) than the midscalp and crown. Photo-based planning at Sule Hair Clinic uses zone-by-zone mapping rather than a single flat number.
They give a rough range, nothing more. A calculator cannot measure your donor characteristics — hair calibre, curl, colour contrast against your skin, or the density of the safe donor zone. Two patients at the same Norwood stage can need very different plans. Use a calculator for orientation, then get a photo assessment.
One graft (follicular unit) contains 1 to 4 hairs — commonly around 2.2 hairs on average. That is why 3,000 grafts can mean roughly 6,000–7,000 individual hairs. Single-hair units are placed along the hairline for a soft edge, and multi-hair units go behind them for visual density.
Often yes, but the plan is always shaped by what your donor area can provide safely and by the technique used. Some patterns are best treated in one large session, others staged over two. Unshaven procedures are planned at a lower graft number by design because of how the extraction is performed. Your physician explains which approach fits your case.
