It comes from your own scalp — the back of the head and the sides above the ears. This band is called the safe donor area because those follicles are genetically less sensitive to DHT, the hormone that drives pattern hair loss. Follicles taken from there keep their original behaviour after they are moved, which is why transplanted hair continues to grow in its new position. Hair from another person cannot be used; it would be rejected by the immune system.
The individual follicles that are removed do not grow back — a follicle can only exist in one place. What recovers is the appearance of the area. Grafts are harvested in a spread-out pattern so the surrounding hairs close the visual gaps, and after healing the donor area looks slightly less dense rather than patchy. Hairs that were only shocked by the procedure and not extracted do regrow, usually within three to six months.
For the first few days there are tiny scabs where each graft was taken, along with mild redness and sometimes numbness or tightness. Scabs come off during the guided washing period in the first one to two weeks. Redness settles over two to six weeks depending on skin tone, and the shaved donor hair grows back to its previous length in roughly one to two months.
It depends on your individual donor density, hair calibre, scalp laxity and the extent of your hair loss — which is why the number can only be given after your donor area is examined, and why it is planned with your long-term hair loss in mind rather than a single session. A responsible plan always keeps reserve for a possible future session.
Over-harvesting means taking too many grafts from too small an area, or taking them outside the safe zone. The result is a visibly see-through or moth-eaten donor area, and because follicles do not regenerate it is difficult to correct. It is avoided by measuring donor density before surgery, spreading extractions evenly, respecting the boundaries of the safe zone, and refusing graft numbers the donor area cannot support.
Beard and chest hair can be used as an additional source when scalp donor supply is limited, most often for density in the crown or for repair work. The texture is coarser and curlier than scalp hair, so it is normally combined with scalp grafts rather than used at the hairline. Whether it suits you is decided during your medical evaluation.
